| Brentwood
Estates is a retirement community in Lincoln. Although, the
residents are enjoying their well earned leisure living, many are
focused on participating in worthwhile endeavors and still want to
reach out to others. Lincoln/Lancaster Habitat for Humanity is
blessed to have Brentwood retirees involved in its Mission.
As the
volunteer who organizes the lunch providers, I first knew of this
commitment when people from Brentwood wanted to provide meals for
construction volunteers. I schedule this great group one day a
month. Also, I have become acquainted with the managers and activity
director and in talking with them realize how enthusiastic and proud
they are to partner with Habitat for Humanity. |

One cold,
snowy day in February, my husband, Ron, and I spent part of an
enjoyable afternoon at Brentwood Estates talking to four ladies and
the activity director who help deliver the food. We were greeted
warmly in the cozy area by the big fireplace and had a wonderful
time visiting and laughing. The women told me why they like to go in the Brentwood van to take the lunches and I want to share their thoughts. Merna Perry said “Habitat is the greatest. Those workers are so grateful to see us come and Brentwood does fix a great lunch for us to deliver.” Marge Macke said, “ Habitat is one of my favorite organizations. They do such wonderful work and I feel privileged to be a part of it.” Ruth Lindquist commented - “You bet! I believe our job in life is to help others. God says that’s what we should do.” Margaret Buckendorf wrote in my notebook the following: “It is a wonderful idea and so many families have been helped. Everyone appreciates the people that come to serve them a meal.” Debbie DeFrain, Activity Director, wrote, “Arranging a lunch is a way for folks to be involved in supporting Habitat for Humanity. It helps all of us express appreciation for those that work so hard in the building process.” Other remarks were, “It is gratifying to see young and old working side by side and doing good makes you feel good.” There is nothing more I can add except to say, “Thank you Brentwood for bringing lunch.” |
